Training Philosophy
I believe natural training is better. Training aids can assist in getting results, but they do not teach the horse to work naturally.
First you must look at the horse and determine what he is capable of doing. So when looking over your horse you need to decide where he would do best.
Flexibility is the first part of teaching horses to carry themselves naturally. In order to further a horse’s training you must first get the horse supple. Once the horse is flexible it is important to continue working on flexing so you maintain the horses flexibility.
Horses are much like human athletes. Before a human enters a competition they practice. They start out their workout with stretching and warm up exercises. It is the same for a horse. They need to be allowed to stretch and warm up their muscles before doing any type of workout. I start out my riding sessions by walking around the ring to allow the horse to relax and prepare for the workout. Next I move to the center of the ring and begin to walk small circles.
Before any workout starts, I decide what my goal is for this riding session. The goal needs to be attainable. It is good to have a goal so you have something to work for each ride. Once you have attained your goal it is time to stop. There is no need to work a horse into the ground if he is doing what you are asking.
